Entertaining start that finds a spaceship crew in a horrifying situation after making a big mistake while investigating a signal on a planet's surface. The crew and the heroine have an interesting dynamic on the ship and the aliens are appropriately alien. Even though this is a first of a series there is a satisfying ending to this episode while leaving some things mysterious enough to make me want to move on to the next book.I also though it was a cool plot device to have this "blue collar" girl aboard a ship populated with doctors and scientists, I think that lends to a fun dynamic. recommended.
