I've often looked at my best friend Princess and wondered what was going on in her head. STANDING WITH THE DOG is written for the lay person to understand, and gives incredible insight into just exactly where your dog's head is at.I not only enjoyed this book, but I appreciated the clear and concise way this author set forth information so that I could not only recognize what Princess is trying to tell me, but feel comfortable in following through with her.

Excellent book for current or potential dog owners. You won't find step by steps for raising a healthy dog here, but a foundation upon which all those step by step books will make sense (or not). The purpose of this book is to understand the dog, it's nature, and how to respect it.
A great educational book by an extremely talented K-9 trainer. Mel Helmick is a proven expert on K-9's. She understands how they think. If you love Dog's then you absolutely need to get a copy of this great read! You will definitely better understand why your Dog acts the way it does.
Everyone who lives with a dog or spends much time with a dog should have at least a basic level of understanding of K9 Psychology. Every day I see people treating their dogs as a doll - to be admired and played with on they have time once in awhile, and not as a very intelligent animal that can be trained to do so much more once we understand the dog's thought and behavioral processes. Since reading Standing with the Dog I have become a better handler and trainer. I highly recommend this book.
I know the Author of this book personally. She is more than well versed in dogs (and humans) behavior. She has spent many years training K9's as police dogs. She is still very involved. She sent me signed copy and I began reading it immediately. At first I was excited to read it because she is my friend. After a dozen pages I no longer read it with gusto because of the author, but because of the knowledge and content. Every dog owner should read this book and refer to it often. For the love of dog, buy this book!
