Legends of the Rhine Wilhelm Ruland 9781171651529 Books

This is a book of folk legends and folk lore from the Rhine region of Germany. They are generally about folk legends or supernatural beings interacting with normal people--like sirens on the Rhine, or why a certain knight has a certain coat-of-arms.

They are fairly easy to read, although I didn't care for the tone of the prose (can't quite put my finger on why). As for audience, the language and story style would be appropriate for children, but some of the stories are downright cruel (burning starving poor people alive, for example), so I'd recommend at least giving it a read-through before sharing it with any young'uns.

There are no illustrations. Page numbers are left in the text. Table of contents is active, though there is something weird about its formatting, such that it appears with only one or two words per line (like a really narrow column on a wide page).

Contains about 50 legends sorted by region.

Legends of the Rhine Wilhelm Ruland 9781171651529 Books Reviews

Legends of the Rhine is one of the finest books you can read and read to your children, it tells the story of one the most amazing rivers in Europe. It has tales of knights, monsters, and maidens. One story I related to a freind about the albino doe who nursed a women's son whose part Cherokee said that the doe was an angel, I especially liked the part where the king her husband had a convent built in the clearing because his wife's prayers had turned it holy. Of a dragon offered a sacrifice of a Christian maiden upon seeing a cross drowning itself in the river outside its lair, and the tribe that worshipped it converting and its youngest leader taking the woman for his wife. Truly this is a wonderful book to share with your children, and its worth reading to yourself. If you get the chance, buy and read this book.
good read
Got for free thanks
Nice collection of tales from various parts along the Rhine. Engaging. The stories are from various parts and include several stories about knights, maidens, and ghosts.
I haven't finished it yet, so that is why I didn't give five stars. It's fascinating, and fun so far, though!!
It was what the title says it will be. Enjoyed reading on a Rhine River Trip.
Very useful if you want to look into the legends and folktales about the cities and the places around the Rhine... or if you just need to do find a book to do a research paper for your Rhine in European History class.
